Chicago White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial $34 Million Agreement.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the power-hitting player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The contract includes a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
• $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for placing in the top ten.
• An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to play for the Chicago franchise, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

That year also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The very next day in the final against the United States, he hit a tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual championship win.
