Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Rebuke

Personalities from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a significant sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from Within Political Ranks

A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
