Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.

The Content That Sparked the Controversy

The recorded message, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in defense or defense positions.

"As we did, you all took an vow to defend and uphold this constitution," the officials stated in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to follow directives that contravene the legal system or our national charter."

Trump's Incensed Reply

The clip appeared to prompt a furious response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader published a joint announcement condemning the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the security of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical online messages and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.

Representatives' Firm Answer

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a response.

"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this United States and took an oath to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that sacred obligation."

"The significant point is that the former president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "The entire nation must unite and censure the ex-president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Additional Partisan Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of public representatives."

He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."

The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of Congress telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in American history."

The GOP official also according to sources informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and determine all that."

Administration Response

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."

"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the official said. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the executive's proper directives."

She stated: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can cause casualties, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
