Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
