Republicans in California have initiated a legal action in federal court on Wednesday, contesting a significant redistricting measure that could flip up to five House seats for Democrats.
This initiative, Proposition 50, received approval by voters Tuesday night, marking a decisive victory for the Democratic side. The plan grants on a temporary basis the power to delineate congressional districts to the California legislature, enabling it to approve maps that are expected to assist the Democratic party pick up five congressional seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a direct response to partisan redistricting in the state of Texas, where GOP lawmakers, following the US president's direction, have created several new safe Republican districts.
