JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not precisely an original feature. Rather, the recent film from the JuJutsu Kaisen fantasy saga is a compilation of the series' second installment stitched together with the initial episodes of its third season, which kicks off the Culling Games storyline from the source material. This establishes Execution, which has been given a fresh preview, the first way to watch the commencement of the next season ahead of its 2026 January debut. The movie premieres in Japan on Nov. 7, and in North America on Dec. 5.
In the Culling Games storyline, Elite sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu finally joins the anime series and is tasked by sorcery authorities to take down his classmate Yuji Itadori. Their much-anticipated fight takes place for the first time on the silver screen, and if the animation team at Mappa have a treat as the two-part Thunderclap episodes prepared for fans this festive season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may turn out to be the gift that fans have anticipated.
"Thunderclap episodes" from the second season is often hailed as a top-tier scene in the history of anime, despite all the controversy in last year when the series first premiered. It was claimed that the artists were enduring harsh deadlines to the extent, and the released version that was shown at the time was unfinished and reportedly not what the artists initially intended.
The episode features a long-awaited battle between two strong jujutsu users, the King of Curses and the Eight-Handled Sword. It includes unique visual techniques, excellent direction, and dynamic fight choreography. A later Blu-ray release allowed the team to insert new moments to expand the fight. So it appeared likely Execution could enhance the fight further. However, viewing the new trailer, it's difficult to determine if that fight has undergone further polishing. It'd be a letdown if it didn't, because a sequence that grand has to be seen on the largest display with the finest quality available.
The second season of JuJutsu Kaisen boosted the show to become the top anime of the year, and when the two-part finale were released back to back, it was the topic of conversation for an extended period in the animation fandom. Audiences had heard of the problems with the production, which made them appreciate what they viewed even more. People clamored to see if the disc version, made available on March 18, would include new footage to the sequence or to see if it was refined somewhat, and were thrilled to see exactly that, alongside reshades, smoother movement, and revised visual style.
But the physical release can only touch up what has initially broadcast in the broadcast edition, whereas the film has the opportunity to properly present the moment with more adjustments and completely new animated sequences.
At present, these pair of installments represent the masterpiece of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be treated as such by Mappa, especially considering the controversy they encountered at the time. It's captured the interest of anime fans all over the globe, and the Culling Games storyline is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of the following year. If Mappa wants to start the year off right, run back the show's top scene once again in theaters with the finest version we've experienced so far.
