A pair of undefeated records remained intact at Anfield, but solely one side could take real contentment from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men carried out a perfect game plan of stifling and containing the hosts, with the first scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure highlighting the lingering limitations behind the reigning champions' latest upturn.
A drab goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was largely attributable to the immense solidity of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, coupled with the Anfield side's inability to break down a well-drilled visitors' unit. Liverpool were limited to hopeful half-chances, and a sprinkling of boos could be heard around the famous ground at the full-time whistle on a laboured performance.
"Should I do not use the whole squad and we have a schedule like this, I would not make changes," the manager explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all know his past history was challenging. He is in red-hot shape but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the head needs to win over the emotion."
Liverpool at first showed more energy and sharpness than in previous outings, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the flank. Nevertheless, golden chances were scarce. The home side's best moments in the opening half involved striker Hugo Ekitiké.
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to hit the target with his clearest chance. Meeting a pacy Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the attacker miscued a glance that hit the Perri while facing an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity came from an Alisson mistake. The Brazilian keeper sent a careless pass directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort back towards goal was gathered by the recovering Alisson.
The contest deteriorated into a scrappy encounter, low on incident. The midfielder, back from suspension, forced a save from Perri from range. The resulting scramble resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, giving the hosts a free-kick in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
Slot introduced a triple substitution to bring impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his side in front from a corner, his header bouncing just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring streak for Leeds in the closing stages, but his tap-in was flagged out for a marginal offside call. In the end, both teams had to settle for a share of the points.
