We are verifying images and video circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
