Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
