New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
