Radioactive Shrimp Crisis: Indonesia Confronts Contamination in Key Industrial Area

A significant industrial zone situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear pollution after an official team detected presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing facilities within the site, which includes companies shipping frozen seafood.

Investigation and Discovery of Contamination

The country's authorities initiated an inquiry when the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled coated prawns exported by a local company.

The FDA issued an warning instructing distributors and sellers to discard the goods and not sell it, although the found amount was far below the agency's action limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.

The FDA stated: “The main impact on health of worry following longer term, ongoing low dose exposure (for example through eating of contaminated products or water over time) is an elevated chance of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Health Examinations

Radioactivity scans revealed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not name the twenty-one other manufacturing facilities, but said they would promptly undergo cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear authority.
