The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined acronym came to light a few months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a minor who has lost their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
