The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account this autumn titled A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his experience spent in jail.

The revelation emerged shortly after the former president left prison as he appeals the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy in a case to acquire election campaign funds linked to the government of former Libyan leader.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail one sees little, and nothing to do,” he notes in a preview, indicating the memoir centers around his musings during seclusion instead of extensive analysis on the overcrowded and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where one hears endless commotion,” he states. “The noise is alas constant. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is fortified behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated via screen from his cell, characterizing his incarceration as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, showing great humanity, easing this ordeal tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural former head from the EU and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to go through the volumes he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, a plot where an innocent man is imprisoned later flees to take revenge.

Daily Reality

The former leader was held secluded due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Guards were stationed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns prison cuisine might have been spat on. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, according to reports. Not known is if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain daily while he was in prison, stated during proceedings security would be better released compared to inside. “He has faced death threats, listened to yells at night plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

His incarceration began in late October after the judiciary imposed a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to obtain political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
