Out of every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally watched, nothing has lingered in my mind as much as the fear-filled conclusion of the graphically gory as well as highly provocative 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based filmmaker developed a dark, melancholy and often savage world with some tiny , forlorn twinges of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from a drive to expand animation even more, the director explained that it was more a try to communicate a widespread, cross-cultural message concerning “the common origin of every conflict.”
That idea is expressed through a squad of colorful pastel bears , openly based on a well-known line of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a culture built around warmongering and the defense industry, numerous these creatures are consumed by slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a religious scripture that claims them they previously were rulers of the woodland, until these creatures expelled them.
Some have not completely accepted the brainwashing, , would rather experiment with substances or fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these vivid animals have visible genitals and clear sex drives.
For a particular especially vicious, cynical bear, Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a path to power — and specifically to authority over his more tender, more compassionate sibling Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor , a seeming antisocial figure , and while fear dominates his unit and claims his teammates one by one, he grabs more and more power for himself, in increasingly violent, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own horror, through a spreading, destructive monster in their woods.
“At the beginning, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it becomes a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars starts out resembling among the quirky movies by an iconic animator, which find a naughty glee in letting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it evolves into more akin to a more grim movie by that same director, with increasingly visual gore , a noticeable relation to the actual horror of conflict.
By the end, it’s a complete Grand Guignol carnage.
The horror which makes this a perfect Halloween viewing begins a lot earlier than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted gorehounds, for enthusiasts of intense movies who desire to see a film they haven’t ever watched previously, and who can handle a plot which delivers unflinching brutality.
View it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the conclusion will crawl into your mind and stay with you.
