The King's Record-Setting Point-Scoring Streak Ends, However Lakers Secure Victory Over Toronto.

The Lakers star knew his historic streak of putting up 10+ points was in danger. At the decisive instant, though, it didn't concern him.

The correct basketball play involved passing the ball – which is exactly what he did. Following that play, the legendary streak finished.

James's unprecedented run of over 1,200 straight regular-season outings scoring at least ten ended on Thursday night, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader finished with eight points during the Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus the Toronto Raptors. He provided the clutch helper, feeding Rui Hachimura for a three-pointer to win the game.

“Zero,” James stated in response on the record concluding. “The important thing is we won.”

A Team-First Decision Seals Victory

James could have sought to clinch the contest – and preserved the streak – on the final possession, yet he opted to pass to Hachimura on the wing. Hachimura made the shot, with LeBron celebrated triumphantly.

“Just playing the game correctly. Make the smart play,” James noted. That is my M.O.. It's how I was taught to play. That's what I've done throughout my career.”

James is fully cognizant of how many points he's scored at all times,” commented Lakers coach JJ Redick. “He did it just as he has countless times.”

The Record's Closing Chapter

LeBron checked back into the game for the final time at under five and a half minutes to go, the result and the streak on the line. He had only six points from 3 for 15 from the field at that juncture.

He managed a basket at 1:46 left to level the contest and missed a 14-footer at one minute to go which could have taken him into double figures.

He didn’t take one more attempt – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves found him as time wound down, however, James opted to dish it off instead.

The spirits of the game, if you approach it the proper way, they will reward you,” Redick added.

A Look Back at a Staggering Record

This incredible run commenced over eighteen years ago. It was easily the greatest such streak in professional basketball: MJ had 866 straight double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run at 575.

LeBron is such a team-oriented player,” said Lakers center a fellow Laker.

“He’s just playing the sport. He had the opportunity but given his nature as a player and his character as an individual, he chose the pass, found Rui and secured the game.”

Scoring in double figures had typically been a guarantee well before the fourth quarter began. Throughout his run, he had reached double figures by the start of the fourth on the vast majority of occasions coming into the contest.

However, two such single-digit games after three periods took place in the last week: He recorded nine points entering the final quarter against Dallas on 28 November, and then had six points going into the fourth against Phoenix on Monday night.

LeBron was able to extend the streak against the Suns. One game later, it was over – and he celebrated anyway.

My focus is to make the right play. That is instinctive, win, lose or draw,” James declared. When you make the smart play, the game gods forever returning the favor.”
