Against a backdrop of sleet, flurries, and a swirling breeze off the banks of the Humber, alongside a determined Hull City side fighting for promotion, this presented all the makings of a difficult night's task for Chelsea.
"We might have scored more but the opposition are a strong team and it was a difficult tie; I’m delighted with the performance," the manager stated. "This club means a lot to me so it was nice to get a good welcome from the fans of supporters. The attitude of the lads was excellent."
The Rosenior has this city dear to him, given some of his relatives are from Hull and his enjoyable spell in charge of the Tigers. This happy connection continued with a commanding display from his team, who in the end strolled into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Seventy-two hours after surrendering a two-goal advantage in the Premier League, there was a hint of vulnerability about Chelsea going into this intriguing cup clash. The packed Hull support clearly sensed it too, but Rosenior's men navigated the challenge with ease.
Rosenior made alterations, enacting seven of them to his starting lineup. The tie could and maybe should have been decided long before it eventually was, with two Estêvão Willian and the forward at fault for missing excellent chances to put their side ahead in the opening period.
However, luckily for the away team, Pedro Neto was in a far more clinical mood. He broke the scoring with a spectacular distance strike, which acted as the spark for Chelsea to take command of the match. By full time, they had four, with Neto netting a trio of them for a brilliant three-goal haul.
The home side showed plenty of spirit throughout, but the clearer opportunities always came to the visitors. The winger should have broken the scoring when he rounded keeper Dillon Phillips before inexplicably shooting over. Delap then had a comparable horror moment in front of goal against his old team.
He blocked a Phillips's clearance which bounced back from the bar, and Delap began to run away believing the ball had gone over the line. It had not, and by the time he understood, Hull's defenders had reacted to clear the threat.
Delap had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was hugely influential from there on out, providing 3 key passes. The opening was for the first goal as his pass teed up his teammate to score from outside the box. Six minutes after the second half began, it was 2-0 as the forward's set-piece went straight in through Phillips's legs.
Seven minutes after the second goal, the match was effectively ended as a magnificent run from the forward laid on his teammate to slide into an empty net. Neto then finished his treble as Delap once again played the crucial ball for the striker to calmly convert by a stranded goalkeeper.
At that point, the effort Hull had done in the opening thirty minutes had been erased. Their focus must now switch back to achieving a promotion to the Premier League under Sergej Jakirovic, who rested several key players with that aim in mind.
"In my opinion we earned at least one goal but if we play like this we will be in a strong situation in the Championship," the Hull manager commented. "Keep fighting, maybe in the upcoming games this can be a good example of how we should play."
There was great effort to the end, and they nearly got a consolation when a substitute struck a post in injury time. But this was Chelsea’s evening, and another encouraging stride for their new manager at a stadium he knows very well.
The result made for an in the end routine night's work, and the FA Cup-shaped omens are positive from here for Chelsea. They have faced Hull on three other occasions in this competition in the past ten years and on each occasion, they have gone on to make the final. Much remains to be work in that regard, but this was another significant positive for Rosenior.
