A campaign is aiming to propel a Palestinian lullaby to the Christmas number one spot. The project aims to provide aid to communities in Gaza while also spotlighting Palestinian culture and creativity.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a moment to stand with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He acknowledged the potential for an surprise number one.
“That would be amazing if that happened, yes,” he stated. “I wouldn't be completely disappointed if it doesn’t, Christmas singles are a category of their own.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the reimagining of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's powerful central theme.
“It occupies a very special place for a lot of people,” Barghouti said. “The message is that I would choose to perish with honor than exist without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we desire to exist a life of dignity that we merit as a people.”
The song was recorded after a major charity concert held in the autumn. First conceived to be captured during the live event, the rendition was cut from the show due to time constraints.
The notable list of artists contributing to Lullaby features a range of prominent voices from the scene. All took part in the earlier concert, which successfully generated a significant sum for humanitarian aid.
Lullaby was crafted by a team of talented individuals. The song features a combination of the original Arabic with contemporary English verses.
The team running the campaign have stated that their aim is to generate maximum funds for a charitable pot. These donations will be channeled to projects in Palestine through an non-profit partner.
“There is no a fixed goal,” a figure said. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Obviously, the greater the amount, the better. It all goes out to the people of Gaza.”
The context in the territory was characterized as its profound destruction, with a huge proportion of infrastructure reportedly destroyed or damaged.
“Against that backdrop, a couple of million is unlikely to make an enormous impact. But I think what truly matters is primarily raising awareness for this issue and demonstrating that another narrative exists.”
The single 'Lullaby' is set to be released at the end of the week. Additionally, a full recording of the benefit event will be made ready to watch on a popular streaming site from later in the month.
