While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
